Mrs. Roberta Johnson Obituary

Services for Mrs. Roberta Hodge Johnson, age 92, a resident of Mint Hill, NC; formerly of Gary, WV, who peacefully departed this life on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at her home.  She was born March 2, 1926 in Mercer County, WV,  and the daughter of the late George and Cora (Millner) Hairston.  She was educated in Mercer County and Marshall University where she studied early childhood education  She worked as a Head Start teacher for over 20 years.  For more than 50 years, she was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church in Gary.  She was a faithful Sunday School teacher, usher, and member of the kitchen committee.  Upon moving to NC in 2012, she joined Rocky Ridge Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang with the Hymn Choir.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ulysses Grant Hodge and second husband, Samuel Lewis Johnson; her son, Michael B. Hodge and sister, Mildred Hairston Hodge. She is survived by her son, Joseph (Jacqueline) Hodge of Dayton, OH, daughters, Karen (Chester) Thomas with whom she made her home in Mint Hill and VIcki Lynch of Waxhaw, NC; grandchildren:  Justin (Julie) Thomas and Courtney (Gabriel) Evans, Jordan G. Lynch and Dayna Hodge Lynch; great-grandchildren, Zoey Thomas and Gabriel Evans Jr.; brother, Richard (Rosa) Hairston and sister, Mattie L. (Henry) Wilkins.  She is also survived by Lewis's daughters:  Frances "Sue" (Carnell) Watson and Ella (George) Woolridge and uncle, Beverly Millner, aunt, Pauline McDaniel, cousin, Sandra Dillard; sisters-in-law:  Nancy Mays, Rita Jean Hairston and Bernice Hairston and brother-in-law, John Ed Hodge and  a host of nieces, nephews and friends.  Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, March 23, 2018 with Dr. Fred Gibson officiant and the Rev. Eugene Watson, eulogist. at Greater Providence Baptist Church 2000 Milton Road in Charlotte, NC.  Entombment will be held at 2:00 p,m. , on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Rest lawn Mausoleum 6605 New Hope Road in Bluewell, WV.     The family will receive friends one hour prior to Services on both Friday and Saturday.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to SAG AFTRA foundation (sagaftra.foundation) or a charity of choice in memory of Mrs. Johnson.
