Services for Ben Simon, a resident of Bluefield, WV; formerly of Wilcoe, WV, who departed this life early on Thursday, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born in Kimball and the son of the late Rufus Simon Sr., and Anna Bell Sturdivant Simon. After completing his education at Gary District High School, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Wilcoe, where he served as an Usher, Trustee Board and Financial Committee. Also the past President of both the WV Chapter of the Gary District Alumni and the McDowell County Brothers' Club. For many years, he was employed by the City of Gary as Street Commissioner and Supervisor. He enjoyed traveling, attending both family and school reunions, sports and was an avid reader. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings: Clara Houghton, Charles, Melvin and Rufus Simon Jr., and Harriette S. Wright. Ben will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Marvelene H. Simon of the home; his children: Brenda Simon of Brooklyn, NY, Juanicia Valentine of Temple Hill, MD, Wilfred Dexter (Christine) Simon of Bluefield, VA and Patricia Simon Washington of Wilcoe; one stepson, he helped raise, Larry Carter of California; a special granddaughter, Benita J. Hickman of Bluefield; his four siblings: Albert Simon of Detroit, MI, Earl (Carolyn) Simon of Lenoir, NC, Marion A. Montgomery of Albany, NY and Cora Marie Scales of Gary; a host of grand and great-grandchildren; several generations of nephews, nieces and cousins; a special neighbor, Vittoria Lijoi and a great number of life time friends. Ben Simon's Homegoing Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Greater Mount. Zion Pentecostal Church, 104 Park Avenue in Bluefield, WV. Entombment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum 6605 New Hope Road in Bluewell, WV. Visitation will begin at the Church 1 hour prior to Service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
