Brian J. "Bum" Thompson Sr., age 51 of Welch, who departed this life on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Welch Community Hospital. He was born July 23, 1967 in Webster, MA, and the son of Ellen "Ella" V. Valentine of Welch, and the late Oscar "Harold" Thompson. Brian was a 1985 graduate of Mount View High School and had served in the United States Navy. At an early age, he attended (the former) Smith Memorial Church in Welch, and later joined Miracle Mt. Carmel Church of God in Kimball. He was a self employed "jack of all trades," carpenter. He enjoyed spending time with his family and riding his four-wheeler. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys' fan and an all sports' coach. Brian had a pleasant, easy going personality and never met a stranger. In addition to the passing of his father, Oscar "Harold," he was preceded in death by one son, Trey and his maternal grandmother, Martha Taylor. He leaves a life time of treasured memories to his mother, Ellen "Ella," his three sons: Brian J. Thompson Jr., of Garner, NC, Ryan Thompson and Matthew Thompson both of Wilcoe; one granddaughter, Niyla Hale of Coalwood; his devoted siblings: Arvella (Jose) Morales and Albert Valentine both of Massachusetts, Teresa Montgomery of Welch, Wanda Thomas of Eckman and Larry (Monica) Thompson of Virginia; two generations of nephews and nieces; three generations of cousins; a host of friends and a special, devoted companion, Tara Staples and her son, Keishawn of Welch.. Brian's Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, August 17, 2018 at St. James Missionary Baptist Church 315 Court Street, Welch, with the Reverends: George Masterson, James Montgomery and William Spencer officiating. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 6605 New Hope Road in Bluewell. His nephews, cousins and friends will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., until time of Service at the Church.
