Early on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, Alphonso "Bro" Wray III., age 70 who resided at 384 Stewart Street in Welch, WV departed this life at the Hubbard House in South Charleston, WV following a long illness.  Bro as he was affectionately known was born June 1, 1951 in Welch and the son of the late Alphonso II., and Madeline (Dillard) Wray.  After completing his education at Welch High School, he lived in Cleveland, OH for a short time and returned to Welch and began working at U.S. Steel No. 51 Coal Mines in Pineville, WV.  He joined St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Welch, where he faithfully served until declining health as an Usher and a member of the Praise Choir.   He was a member of the Kimball Lodge No. 13.  Bro was a "people person," who had a genuine concern for others. He enjoyed watching television; especially Gunsmoke, both football and basketball games and the Swamp People.  Bro will be remembered for his faithfulness to God and to his Church, and his values of  "family matters most."  In addition to his  parents, he was preceded in death by two of his sisters, Thelma and Lucy Mae.  Alphonso "Bro," was the devoted husband of Rhonda L. Chatten-Wray for 48 years; a devoted father to their four sons:  Alphonso Wray IV., of the home; Antonio N. (Shenika) Wray of Welch, Allan B. Wray Sr., of Bluefield, WV and Andre' N. Wray of Brushfork, WV; a loving grandfather  to his 11 grands:  Tia, Tess, AJ, Diamond, Brooklyn, Tay, Tee-Tee, Brandon Jr., Braylen, Andre' and Luna; two great-grands, Zy'air (and due to arrive in November), Kamden; a devoted brother to:: Jackie ((Ralph)  Welch, Sheila (Eric) Hall both of Cleveland; Barbara Mask of Welch, Ditricia (Tyrone) Hall, Renee (Jeffrey) Lee, Alice  Mae Martin, all of Cleveland and Dee-Dee (Robert) Colvert of Atlanta, GA, Michael Wray of Wheeling, WV and Joe (Barbara) Fluellan of Cleveland; his uncle, Johnny Ed (Amethia) Dillard; three sisters-in-(love)-law:  Fannie Baylor, Louise (Phil) Law and LeDale Chatten and brother-in-law, Joe Chatten; several generations of nephews, nieces and cousins; his Church family and many, many friends.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, October 15, 2021 at St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Welch, with his Pastor, the Reverend George Masterson officiating, assisted by the Reverend William R. Spencer Sr.  Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery 1917 W. Main Street in Princeton, WV.  His Sons and Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., and Masonic Rites will be conducted at 11:15 a.m. Services entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch, (to leave online condolences:  gregory-pagefh.com.)  Both COVID protocol and the wearing of masks will be followed.
