Anthony Vaughn Obituary

 Anthony E. Vaughn, a long time resident of Hemphill, WV, who departed this life on Saturday, at Welch Community, was born in Welch.  He was the fifth child born into the very loving parentage of Laura O. (Johns) Vaughn of Hemphill and the late William H. "Pattycake" Vaughn Sr.   At a young age, he enjoyed attending Sunday School at (the former) Emanuel Tabernacle Church in Hemphill, and was a graduate of Welch High School.  He was a Veteran of the United States Army, where he was a marksman. For several years, he lived and worked in Roanoke, VA, and after returning home, he was employed at Stevens Correctional in Welch, as a Correctional  Officer..  Anthony earned many certifications, as he enjoyed attending classes and learning new skills.  He was a great conversationalist, loved football and was both an avid reader and fisherman.  In addition to his father, William Sr., he was preceded in death by three siblings:  Jeffery, David and Cleo Vaughn; one sister-in-law, Linda Wilkins.  He leaves lasting memories to his mother, Laura, his wife, Gwenda "Nee-Nee" Berry Vaughn of Newberry, SC, his daughter, Adrianne Culbertson of Welch and his son, Marcus Culbertson of the home and stepdaughter, Monique Caldwell of Newberry; his siblings:  Michael T.(Tricia) Vaughn Sr. of Hemphill, Keith D. Vaughn of Carlsbad, CA, William H.  (Vilma) Vaughn Jr. of Anchorage, AL, Pamela A. Lane of Statesville, NC, Janet Bender of Detroit, MI and Linda K. Vaughn of Welch; three grandchildren;  a host of aunts and uncles; which includes a special uncle, Cleatus Harrison of Statesville; nephews and nieces; many cousins and  three brothers-in-law:  Warren Caldwell of Newberry, the Reverend Ronald Owens of Durham, NC and Ernest Caldwell of Los Angeles, CA; his special friends:  William Welch, Danny Lindsey and Robert Bryson and other close friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, September 21. 2018 at St. James Missionary Baptist Church 315 Court Street, Welch, with Elder Georgia Smith, eulogist, Rev. George Masterson presiding and Elder Ken Lane assisting.  Interment will follow in Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery 5550 Bagging Plant Road in Dublin, VA, where burial rites will be conducted.  Family and friends will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers.  Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., until the time of Service.
