Obituary

Arnold E. "Flookie" Hughes age 78 of Kimball, West Virginia departed this life on  Friday, November 11, 2022 in the  Chippenham Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia after a brief illness.  He was born in Gary, West Virginia, December 23, 1943 and the first son of Dorathy Hughes Phillips and Alfred Corley.  He was educated at Gary Elementary School and Gary District High School, where he graduated in 1962.  He was an active football player and a very fast typist  (known to type 100 words per minute.)  After High School Graduation, he entered the United States Army, where he served for six years.  He married his "High School Sweetheart," and "the Love of his Life," Patricia (Tricia) Newbill Hughes on December 31, 1964 and they were inseparable for the past 58 years.  Flookie worked his entire career for the McDowell Board of Education Transportation Division, as a School Bus Driver.  He loved driving the Bus and all of the kids.  He was hard on them about being on time and threatened to leave them if they were late.  The kids loved joking and laughing with him.  Flookie was a lover of many things; especially spending time with his wife Pat, taking pictures at the GDHS Reunion, his Classmates, Weddings, and Family gatherings; his camera equipment, buying new televisions and attending both High School  and WVU College Football games.  He enjoyed  working on cars, his Lionel trains and most of all he enjoyed grilling both steaks and ribs to serve his Family.  He was known for his two most favorite drinks, Mr. Hennessy and Coors beer.  Flookie was preceded in death by his loving Mother, Dorathy Hughes Phillips; his most favorite Aunt, Hattie Hughes; his Father, Alfred Corley; his Grandmother, Verna Hughes; two Brothers, John "Punkin" Phillips and Darrell "Boot Nanny" Phillips and his In-laws, Harry and Thelma Newbill.  Flookie leaves to cherish his memory, his Wife, Patricia Newbill Hughes, his Brothers, Shadrick (Joan) Phillips of Glen Burnie, Maryland, and Larry (Maria ) Hughes of  Kimball and Byron Phillips of Christiansburg, Virginia; his Sisters, Marsha Faye Phillips and Thomosha Phillips both of Kimball; a Brother-in-law, Harry S. Newbill of Chicopee, Massachusetts and  two Sisters-in-law, Thelma Ferguson and Beverly (Charles) Carroll both of Woodbridge, Virginia and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, other Relatives and Friends. A Celebration of Life Service for Arnold E. Hughes will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, November 21, 2022 at Mt. Nebo Missionary  Baptist Church 63 Chestnut Street in Kimball with the Reverend George Masterson officiating.  Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens 6605 New Hope Road in Bluewell, West Virginia, where the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard will perform Burial Rites.   Pallbearers will be Nephews, Brothers-in-law and Friends.  Visitation will begin at 10:00  A.M., at the Church until the time of Service.  Services entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch.
