Betty Harris Poteat Obituary

Mrs. Betty M. Harris Poteat age 71, of Maryland, departed this life on Sunday, April 26, 2026 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

A Life Well Lived 

On a peaceful Sunday afternoon, April 26, 2026, Betty

Mae Harris Poteat relocated to her eternal resting

home. She transitioned surrounded by her loving

family, who held her hands as she departed with grace.

Born on June 6, 1954, in Powhatan, West Virginia,

Betty was one of four children born to Ernest Harris

Sr. and Vonnie Kate Edwards Harris. She graduated

from Northfork High School in 1972. As a young girl

she was an adolescent member of Angelic Gospel

Choir WVA, where her love for singing first blossomed

Later in life, she shared her remarkable voice with the

One Accord Choir in Washington, D.C.

In 1980, Betty moved to Maryland, where she built

her life, her career, and her legacy, After retiring, she

relocated to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 2025

to enjoy her next chapter surrounded by family.

Betty leaves behind a lifetime of love, devotion, and

cherished memories. She will be deeply missed by her

husband of 44 years, Rodger Poteat. Their union

plessed them with two daughters: Trinita Greene of

Greensboro, NC, and LaToya Poteat of Jamestown, NC.

She is also remembered by her two stepsons, Ryan

(Stacy) Poteat of Snellville, GA, and Rayburn Womack

of Monroe, GA.

Her legacy continues through her four grandchildren-

A`niyah Poteat, Irionna Poteat, Chayse Greene, and

Kenton Evansand her greatgranddaughter,

Lyric Jackson.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, brother

Ernest (Shine) Harris, grandparents: Rev. Raymond

and Emma Harris, Hubert Edwards, and Howard and

Ethel Elston. She is survived by her sisters Barbara

Hairston and Virgie Harris and was blessed with five

additional siblings: David Elston Sr., Earline Keesley,

Mildred Thomas (recently deceased), Curtis Elston Sr.,

and Ethel Lane.

She will be deeply missed by her nieces, nephews,

extended family, and countless close friends- because

Betty truly never met a stranger.

Her warmth, her infectious smile,

and her unwavering love will forever echo

in the hearts of all who knew her.

Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 8, 2026 at Greater Mt. Zion

Pentecostal Church 104 Park Street in Bluefield. West Virginia. Visitation will

begin at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens

6605 New Hope Road in Bluewell, West Virginia. Services entrusted to​​
