Carolyn Davis Saunders Obituary

Carolyn Ann Davis Saunders, affectionally known to her family and friends as “Nan”, was born in Red Jacket, West Virginia on September 5, 1942 to the late James, Sr. and Annie Lou Davis.  She departed this life on Friday, April 5, 2024 in the Indian Creek Health & Rehabilitation Center in Corydon, Indiana.

During her childhood, she contracted measles resulting in the loss of her hearing.  She attended The West Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind, where she excelled academically, participated in sports, cheerleading, and received her high school diploma.

After high school, she became a licensed cosmetologist and worked as a cosmetologist throughout her life. She had an infectious smile and loved interacting with people and using her creativity. She was baptized at Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Red Jacket. West Virginia, where she helped the kitchen staff and annually helped cook a big meal for the Sunday School’s picnic.  She fell in love with John Saunders and after an extended courtship they married. She helped John, who was raising two of his sons, Larry and Michael Saunders, shower them with love from childhood to young adults.

In addition to her husband and parents, preceding her in death were siblings, James “Bud” Davis, Jr. (Mary Catherine); William “Jack,” Collridge Davis; Thelma Jean Smoot Miller; Thomas “TH,” Howard; Loretta Fullen; and Erskine Thomas Davis; and two step-children, Lawrence “Larry” Saunders and Brenda Brown.

Nan was a very kindhearted and loving person that supported everyone that needed her help with anything she could provide. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, playing board games and cards. She crocheted blankets for her family and friends and proudly gifted them a blanket in their favorite color. In the last four years of her life and as she struggled with health issues, she lived with and was cared for by the family of her great nephew and his wife, Timothy and Christine Bolding.  She is the last child in the immediate family of James, Sr. and Annie Lou Davis.

Nan established a loving relationship with all eight of her late husband’s children and she leaves to mourn the remaining step-children, Darnell (Doretha) McConnell of Charleston, West Virginia; Michael Saunders of Baltimore, Maryland; Marvin {Sherri} Brown of Williamson, West Virginia; Vincent, Michael and Hannah Scales all of Red Jacket, West Virginia; host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, dear friends and a community of people that she cherished.
