Darrell E. Hairston Obituary

Darrell Eugene “Tut” Hairston, age 55 of Gary, West Virginia who departed this life on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at the Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands, Virginia.  He was born April 8, 1966 to Carolyn Swayne Hairston of Gary and the late Archie Hairston Sr.   Along with his father, those preceding him in death includes; his very special aunt, Shelia Hairston, his cousin/brother, Larry “Buster” Hairston also, his uncles: Darrell Hairston, Eddie Hairston, Dwayne Swayne and Sam Hazzard and his aunts: Delia Hazzard, Ernestine Hairston, Maria Swayne and Toni Swayne.  He was educated in the McDowell County School System and was a graduate of Mount View High School, in Welch, West Virginia. He began his working career at an early age. For 15 years he worked as a mechanics' operator for the Tul Tex Factory in Martinsville, Virginia. He also worked in the meat department at Goodson’s Supermarket in Welch.  He hauled coal for Hairston’s Trucking Company in Gary and was employed at (the former) Ryan’s Restaurant and Bluefield College both in Bluefield, Virginia.  Darrell had a real passion for cooking and was always wanting to feed people. He loved his Family, who was of the most importance to him.  He enjoyed joking around and making people smile.  Those left to cherish his memories in addition to his devoted mother, Carolyn are his devoted daughter, Daijah Renee Hairston of Indiana; his devoted brothers, Archie Hairston, Jr. of Gary and Clayton Hairston of Princeton, West Virginia and his devoted sisters: Toni (Jimmy) Leonard of Mooresville, North Carolina, Debra Belle Brown of Raleigh, North Carolina and Kimberly Hairston of Gary, and a special nephew, Jaedon Burress. He also leaves cherished memories to the mother of his daughter and his best friend, Tasha McKinley of Indiana; three special cousins that were like his sisters and brother:  Sabrina (Maurice) Hairston-Thomas of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Trina Hairston of Mebane, North Carolina and Tyrone Hairston of Gary; his uncles:  the Reverend Larry (Patricia)  Hairston of Gary, Michael (Ruth) Hairston of Havaco, West Virginia, Brian Swayne and Fritz Swayne both of Hickory, North Carolina; his aunts: Linda Paramore and Angeline Hairston of High Point, North Carolina, Melva Showalter of Charlotte, North Carolina and Marcellita “Candy” (LD) Swayne-Hairston of Hickory.  His very special, close friends:  Tracey Allison and Johnathan Childress both of Gary and Kenya Mitchell of  Keystone, West Virginia;  a host of cousins, other relatives and friends who loved him dearly.  Service for Darrell E. "Tut" Hairston will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at the New Hope Fellowship Church in Thorpe, West Virginia, with the Bishop Frederick M. Brown officiating.  His family and friends will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m.  Services entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch (to leave online condolences:  gregory-pagefh.com.)
