Erskine Davis Obituary

Erskine Thomas Davis was the youngest of six children born, November 9, 1943, to Annie Lou and James Davis Sr. He attended primary school in the Mingo County in Red Jacket, West Virginia. He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age.

He began his high school years at Liberty High School and graduated from Matewan High School. In 1961, he enlisted in the military and after his tour of duty, Erskine furthered his education at Bluefield State College. While matriculating at Bluefield State, he became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. His hard work and determination led him to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in education. He was a teacher at Sharples High School where he taught business administration, typing and shorthand until the school closed. While teaching at Sharples, he attended Marshall University where he obtained his master’s degree in education. He later joined the staff at Logan High school, in Logan West Virginia.

A devout Christian, he became a member of the Mason's Organization where he served others for years. He also served as a deacon at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, which was his church home. In his service to the Lord, he enjoyed singing and playing the piano. He worked in many different capacities and on a myriad of church committees over his lifetime. He was a Past Member of the Tug River District Minister's & Deacon's Union, Secretary of the Tug River Association and a member of the NAACP.

He was a passionate teacher and his dedication led to him becoming the recipient of the 1995 Miliken Award for excellence in education. He created innovative ways to help students succeed and find lucrative careers in the federal government. Erskine taught keyboarding and business communication in the vocational education program at Logan High School in Logan, West Virginia. The Miliken Foundation said of him “Year after year, Mr. Davis delighted in seeing many of his students perform successfully on the federal keyboarding exams and qualify for federal positions in the nation's capital. Additionally, he invited guest lecturers and organized field trips to various businesses to help students better understand the business world and the opportunities available beyond high school. He also instituted Logan High School's first peer tutoring program; an after-school program that measurably benefited all students involved. As an active participant of the WVEA (West Virginia Education Association) and of the NEA (National Education Association), Mr. Davis has lobbied effectively for the passage of several educational bills that have benefited both students and teachers.”

In his spare time, he enjoyed baking cakes, walking, and catching up with family members. Erskine was a very beloved family member that loved and supported his younger family members in any way that he could. He was known affectionately as “Uncle” by many people that he encountered and helped along life’s path. When anyone in the family married, he quickly welcomed the new family members to the clan and showered them with unwavering love and support.

He departed this life on December 3, 2023, in Louisville, Kentucky where he lived the last three years under the loving care of his great-nephew, Timothy Bolding and wife Christina.

Erskine Davis was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Lou, and James Davis Sr, his two brothers, James’s “Bud” Davis Jr, (Mary Katherine Davis, deceased) and William Collridge Davis (Jack) wife (Lydia Davis of El Paso, Texas), his two sisters, Loretta Fullen (Glen Fullen, deceased) and Thelmas Jean Smoot Miller (Thomas Howard Miller, deceased).
