General Jackson Jones, Jr., (also known as ‘Jack’) 91 of Williamson, West Virginia departed this life on Thursday, October 22, 2020. He was born on November 29, 1928 in Lobata, West Virginia to the late General J. Jones, Sr. and Mildred Fugate Jones. He was the last surviving member of his original family.
He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Jones; a daughter, Jacqueline Finch; a grandson, Richard “Buttons” Hairston, Jr.; brothers, Randall and Richard Nobelton, and Robert O. Jones; sisters, Lillian Belcher, Vernia Crews, Roxie Tanyhill, and Dorothy Jones.
He completed his education at Liberty High School, where he excelled in various sports. He was a veteran having served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the former St. James AME Church, a former member of the Williamson Crown Lodge #16 F&AM and was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Kentucky Colonel and a Shriner. After thirty-six years of employment at ARH, he retired in 1989 having worked as a supervisor of Housekeeping and Stores, worked in surgery, pharmacy and respiratory therapy. He was a lifelong learner, a man of great knowledge and quiet wisdom who could answer any question or figure out any problem put before him. He enjoyed fishing, reading, working crossword puzzles and was an excellent cook. He truly loved the family get togethers on the front porch and at the kitchen table telling funny stories. He was our “Jack” of all trades!
General leaves to celebrate his memory, his loving wife, Marcella Woods Jones of Williamson, West Virginia; sons, Calvin (Hilda) Anthony of Belmont, North Carolina; Jerry (Robin) Jones of Augusta, Georgia; Benny (Ruby) Jones of Matewan, West Virginia; and Garland (Ellie) Jones of Charlotte, North Carolina; daughters, Kimberly (Richard) Hairston of Dayton, Ohio; Debra “Drema” Jefferson of Columbus, Ohio; Stephanie (Steven) Dotson of Williamson, West Virginia and Lynn (Jeffrey) Hairston of Lexington, Kentucky, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a special niece, Carolyn Crews; Regina Wilkerson, whom he loved as his own; a good friend, James “Hickey” Bradley and a host of other
relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held for the public on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the church with social distancing being maintained. A Private Service for the family will be Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 12.00 noon at Logan Street First Baptist Church with Reverend Gerald Dotson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens in Maher, West Virginia. Honorary Pallbearers are James Bradley, Curtis Hight, Sr. and Reverend Robert Settles. Active Pallbearers will be grandsons and a great-grandson.
