Helen Devontenno Obituary

Mrs. Helen Virginia Carper Devontenno, a long time resident of Welch, WV; formerly of Havaco, WV peacefully departed this life on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Princeton Community Hospital.  She was born in Marytown, WV on the 14th day of October, 1937 into the loving parentage of Lawrence and Clara Mae (Hughes) Carper.  Helen was a 1955 graduate of Kimball High School and in earlier years was a member of Mt. Zion Church of Christ in Havaco.  For many, many years, Helen attended church services throughout the county and  surrounding areas.  She was a talented singer and faithfully used her gift to uplift the name of the Lord and to bring comfort to those who had suffered the loss of a loved one.  Several years ago, she became a member of Miracle Mount Carmel Holiness Church in Kimball, WV and faithfully attended as long as her health would allow.  Throughout the years, she had worked for several prominent families in Welch and retired as a Foster grandparent at Fall River Elementary School.  She was an Avon Representative and had established a successful business.  Wearing hats was her trademark and she affectionately was known as "The Hat Lady." She was a "people person," and enjoyed cooking, baking and sharing her Birthdays by inviting others to celebrate her special day.  Helen had a great sense of humor and enjoyed talking with others; even strangers who soon became her friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gerald and three daughters:  Irelene, Pamela and Tonya; one granddaughter, Jennifer, her only sister, Alice Bell and her son-in-law, Stephen Rollins. Helen was the last surviving member of her original family.  She leaves cherished memories to her children:  Sharon Roy of Charleston, WV, Karen Carper of Greensboro, NC, Lawrence (Tammy Marie) Carper of Gary, WV, Sheryl Rollins of Charlotte, NC, Jacqueline (Ernest) Gilliard of Princeton, WV and Columbus Wade Devontenno Jr. of Greensboro; her grandchildren:  O'Brien, Vincent, Cynthia, Erik R., Cheryl (Otis), Willie, Brandi, Nichole, April (Jason), Robin, Caprice, Gerald, Melanie, Latoria, Eugene, Kandra, Amber, Brandon, Erik D., Cordero, Marquese and Marqueta; a host of great and great-great-grandchildren; several nephews, nieces and cousins; which includes two first cousins, Thelma Padgett and Bessie Rosenbalm and a special friend, Bettye Wylie.  Mrs. Devontenno's Homegoing Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Harvest Outreach Center, 700 Straley Avenue in Princeton, WV with Pastor Anthony Blair eulogist and Pastor Earl Thompson presiding.  Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon.   Her Grandchildren will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers.  Interment at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Bluewell, WV.  Services entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch.  .
