Minister Alfonzo Dalton Sr. Obituary

Minister Alfonzo Dalton Sr., age 95, a life long resident of Gary, West Virginia departed this life on Friday, March 21, 2025 in Beckley, West Virginia, following a short illness.  He was born in Gary on the 15th day of April, 1929, into the loving parentage of Tom and Mattie Ellis Dalton.  He was a 1948 graduate of Gary District High School.  He began working at the US Steel No. 2, Alpheus Preparation Plant in Gary, where he had held several different jobs during his employment and until his retirement.  He was the first African American Raw Coal Operator at the No. 2 Tipple.

Minister Dalton accepted the Lord as his Savior at an early age and was filled with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost.  He had faithfully served at New Bethel Church Of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Gary, as the Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, was the Chairman of the  Deacon's Board and wherever needed in the House of the Lord.  His life reflected his firm belief in Jesus, for he not only "talked the talk," but daily "walked the walk," unashamedly of a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Minister Dalton was faithful to his local Church and Churches, the State and International Churches.  His wife, Ruby and their family was his life and providing for them was a testament of his love and devotion.  He enjoyed gardening and was known for his "green thumb."

He was preceded in death by his parents, his precious wife, Ruby; one daughter, Beverly Hayes and each of his siblings:  Mildred Thomas, Willie, Walter, Ernest and  Clarence Dalton and Nettie Thornton.  He was the last surviving member of his original family.

Minister or Brother Dalton, Mr. Dalton or Fonza to those who had the privilege of knowing him... but he took the greatest  pride of all in being a very dear Dad to his children:  Katrina Dalton of the home; Alfonzo Jr., and his wife, Dora Dalton of London, Ohio, Dr. Benjamin and his wife, Gale Dalton of West Bloomfield, Michigan and Dr. Timothy and his wife, Preah Dalton of Wake Forest, North Carolina; a loving grandfather to his 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; his brother-in-law, Carroll Kates and sisters-in-law, Frances White and Sallie Walton and several generations of dear nephews and nieces; his Church family, neighbors and friends.

Zion Pentecostal Church 104 Park Street in Bluefield, West Virginia with his Bishop Phillip Calloway eulogist and District Elder Joseph Saunders officiating.  Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM until the time of Service.  His Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.  Interment 11:00 AM, on Monday, March 31, 2025 at  Restlawn Memorial Gardens 6605 New Hope Road in Bluewell, West Virginia.  Services entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch, West Virginia.  ***In lieu of floral arrangements, Minister Alphonzo Dalton Sr., had requested family and friends to make monetary donations to their local churches or faith-based organizations of their choice.***
