Mrs. Carolyn E. Hairston

Mrs. Carolyn E. "Shorty" Swayne-Hairston, age 73 of Gary, WV, who departed this life on Sunday, August 8, 2021 in the comforts of her home. She was affectionately known as "Shorty" and was born January 23, 1948 to the late Griffin Sr., and Leventa "Dolly" (Wilson) Swayne. Along with her parents, those preceding her in death include her husband, Archie Hairston Sr., her son, Darrell "Tut" Hairston (on July 13, 2021) and her very special sister, Shelia Hairston; two brothers, Griffin Jr, and Dwayne (Toni) Swayne; one sister, Maria Swayne Neal, a special nephew, Larry Hairston, Jr.; three brothers-in-law: Eddie (Ernestine) and Darrell Hairston, Fredrick Showalter and one sister-in-law, Delia (Sam) Hazzard. She was educated in the McDowell County Public School System and completed her education at Gary District High School.  She was a member of (the former) Mount Harman Branch Church of God in Thorpe, WV, she later joined Miracle Mount Carmel Church of God in Kimball, WV and was a lay member of the New Hope Fellowship Church in Thorpe.  Her favorite past times were spent listening to gospel music and visiting with friends and family by telephone.   She was a homemaker and leaves many cherished, loving memories to her devoted family, her daughters: Kimberly Hairston of Gary and Toni (James) Leonard of Mooresville, NC and Debra Belle Brown of Raleigh, NC; her sons, Archie Hairston Jr. of Gary and Clayton Hairston of Princeton, WV; a special grandson, Jaedon and great-grandson, Kameron Burress both of Princeton; her special nieces, Sabrina (Maurice) Hairston- Thomas of Winston-Salem, NC and Trina Hairston of Mebane, NC and her special nephew, Tyrone Hairston of Gary all of whom she loved and considered as her own children; her 11 other grandchildren:  Chantee and Chris Hairston, Deshawn Hairston, Tameka Marshall, Jamie Kheperkara, Daijah Hairston, Anthony and Jocelyn Hairston, Kevin Hairston, Sharese Watkins and Bobby Bell; her 13 great- grandchildren; one sister, Marcelletta "Candy" (Lorenzo) Hairston and two brothers, Bryant and Fritz Swayne all of Hickory, NC; two brothers-in-law, Michael (Ruth) Hairston Sr. of Havaco, WV and the Reverend Larry (Patricia) Hairston Sr. of Gary; three sisters-in-law:  Linda and Angeline Hairston both of High Point, NC and  Melva Showalter of Charlotte, NC; her aunt, Vee Stout and uncle, Lowell Wilson both of Martinsville, VA;  a very special "daughter," Tracey Allison of Gary; a very special cousin, Jackie Johnson of Columbus, OH and her very best friends, Marcella Parks of Columbus and Karen Jones-Gautier of Gary, also a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; other relatives and friends who loved her dearly.  Mrs. Hairston's Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at the New Hope Fellowship Church in Thorpe, with the Bishop Frederick M. Brown officiating.  Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 6605 New Hope Road in Bluewell, WV.  Family and friends will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., until the time of Service at the Church.  Services entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch, (to leave online condolences:  gregory-pagefh.com.)  Please be advised COVID protocol will be followed.
