Sarvain Cobb Obituary

Sarvain Austin Cobb (AKA "Pokey"), age 76 of Coalwood, West Virginia departed this life on Sunday, June 2, 2024 in Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, West Virginia, following illness.  He was born in Caretta, West Virginia on the 18th day of June, 1947 and the son of Walter Sr., and Rosa Lee Mitchell Cobb.  Sarvain was a 1965 graduate of Excelsior High School, where he was an outstanding football player.  In 1964, he received "The Lifetime Achievement Award," for being the Excelsior High School Lion's Southern Regional "Football Champion."  Also in 2008. he was inducted into the "Hall of Fame's All Black Schools' Sports and Hall of Fame's Best."  Sarvain had lived in Brooklyn, New York and was employed as a laborer for 15 years at a refrigeration factory.  Later moving to both Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Wheeling, West Virginia and from there circled back home to Coalwood.  He was a member of the former Mt. Airy Baptist Church in Coalwood.  Sarvain had a very kind, generous spirit and always greeted others with a smile. He enjoyed watching sports on television; especially football and was a huge Westerns' fan.  He was blessed with a voice to sing and enjoyed listening to music. Sarvain was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nadine Cobb and five of his siblings:  Hildred and Jannie Carter, Harry, Joseph and Walter Cobb Jr.  Sarvain leaves to cherish his memory his son, Andrew Cobb of Shallotte, North Carolina, his daughter, Syreeta Cobb of Brooklyn, New York; three  grandchildren and his sister, Novella J. Cobb of Coalwood, his special niece, whom his parents raised as his youngest sister, Caroline Padgett of Coalwood and a sister-in-law, Lillie Cobb of Alabama; a host of nephews, nieces; great-nephews and great-nieces and a special great-niece, Carolyn Padgett; his cousins; which includes a special cousin, Victoria Love of Maryland and his many neighbors and friends throughout his lifetime.  A Homegoing Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, June 14, 2024 at St. James Missionary Baptist Church 135 Court Street in Welch, West Virginia with Reverend George Masterson officiating.  Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens 6605 New Hope Road in Bluewell, West Virginia.  Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM.  Family and friends will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers.  Services entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch.
