Thomas D. "June" Vineyard Jr., age 82, of Jenkinjones, WV, who peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 in Bluefield Regional Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 16, 1934 in Wilcoe and the son of the late Essie (Hairston) and Thomas D. Vineyard Sr. He was a 1952 graduate of Gary District High School and a Veteran of the United States Army. He had lived and worked in New York for a number of years, before his employment with U.S. Steel No. 10 mines in Gary. After leaving the coal mines, he became a UMWA representative. He furthered his education at the University of Colorado, Cincinnati, OH and in Pittsburgh, PA. He joined Apostolic Temple Church in Gary, under the pastoral ship of his uncle, the late Bishop John M. Hairston Sr., where he faithfully served until failing health as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent, Male Chorus, Church van driver and drummer. At an early age, his Dad taught him how to play baseball, he later played in the Negro League. Until age 78, he umpired both little league and high school baseball. For over 10 years, he was a driver at Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jacquelyn Valentine-Vineyard; one son, Dana Martin; two brothers, Alfred and Emanuel Vineyard; three sisters: Danford Montgomery, Goldie Bowlin and Kay Vineyard.
He leaves cherished memories to his wife, Wilberta J. Vineyard; two sisters, Ramona Robinson and Kaye Hamilton both of OH; his children: Thomas D. (Kishon) Vineyard III., of Thorpe, Jacqueline Vineyard of Wilcoe, Timothy (Jennifer) Vineyard of Welch, Terry (Jacqueline) Vineyard of NC and T'ara Vineyard of the home; 14 grandsons, 10 granddaughters; 12 great-grandchildren; step-children: LaTonia Smith and Tiffany Martin both of NC and Tracey Martin of Jenkinjones; six step-grandchildren; two of whom he helped raise, Maceo Smith of NC and India Dixon of Jenkinjones; a host of many nephews, nieces and cousins; numerous dear friends whose lives he touched.
A Home going Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Miracle Mt. Carmel Church of God in Kimball, with Elder Kenneth Brown assisting, Rev. David Cooper, presiding and Rev.George Masterson, eulogist.. Interment will follow in Rest lawn Memorial Gardens, on Rt. 20, Littlesburg Road in Bluewell, where burial rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 1144 of Iaeger.
Family and friends will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., until time of Service at the Church.
